Top 5 Profoto Light Shaping Tools
A flash head is only part of the lighting setup. We carry a considered range of Profoto light shaping tools for creating everything from broad, flattering soft light to focused, high-output hard light.
Available modifiers include octagonal, rectangular and strip softboxes, Magnum and Zoom Reflectors, White and Silver Beauty Dishes, grids and diffusion. These can be hired individually or combined with our Profoto Pro-D3, Pro-B3 and Pro-11 lighting.
Essential Profoto Light Shaping Tools
Profoto RFi 5’ Octa Softbox
One of the most popular light shaping tools in the range, it produces broad, flattering light and a natural round catchlight, making it especially useful for fashion, beauty, portraiture and full-length work.
For greater control, the 5′ Octa can be fitted with a Profoto 50° Softgrid. The grid narrows the spread of light and reduces spill onto the background and surrounding set while preserving the Octa’s soft, flattering character.
Profoto Softlight Reflector (Beauty Dish)
Profoto’s classic Beauty Dish is officially known as the Softlight Reflector. Popular for fashion, beauty and portrait photography, it produces a distinctive light that sits between hard and soft—crisp and defined while remaining flattering and natural. The circular shape creates a clean, round catchlight, with controlled highlights and gently accentuated shadows that give the subject definition without appearing overly harsh.
The Softlight Reflector White produces the softer, broader and more even of the two looks, while the Softlight Reflector Silver provides greater punch, contrast and output with a narrower spread. Both versions can be further modified using the Diffuser for Softlight Reflector, which softens and evens out the light, or the Grid 515 mm, which controls spill and keeps the light focused more tightly on the subject.
Profoto Magnum Reflector
Popular with fashion and portrait photographers, the Magnum Reflector produces a punchy, directional light with crisp highlights and well-defined shadows. Its efficient design provides additional output and throw, making it particularly useful when working over distance or competing with daylight.
Paired with a high-output head such as the Pro-B3 or ProHead Plus and a CTO gel, it can also create a convincing sunlight effect—either imitating direct sun in the studio or reinforcing existing sunlight on location.
